Tyler Reed (2005-09) played four seasons for the SMSU football program and was a standout not only on the field of play, but in the classroom as well.

A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, Reed made a big impact during his true freshman season in 2005, leading the team with 72 tackles, including 42 solo stop and two interceptions.

During his second season, Reed registered 48 tackles and led the team with five pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries.

In 2007, Reed put together impressive numbers, racking up a team-high 101 tackles with three interceptions, five pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick. He was named All-NSIC first team and was named Daktronics All-Region second team.

Reed had another outstanding season to conclude his career in 2008, pacing the Mustangs with a team-high 82 tackles with three forced fumbles and one interception. Reed helped SMSU finish with a 6-5 record, earning its first winning season in nine years. He was named All-NSIC first team, Daktronics All-Region second team and D2football.com All-American honorable mention.

For his efforts off the field during his senior season, Reed was recognized as the 2008 NSIC Glen Galligan Award honoree, which is presented to a football student-athlete who participates at their institution for four years and is academically superior while making a positive contribution to the institution. He was also named CoSIDA Academic All-District second team.

Reed also competed one season with the SMSU wrestling team in 2008-09.
