SMSU Athletics Hall of Honor
Erin (Contons) Markert (2004-07) was a four-year letter winner for the Mustang volleyball team, closing her career as one of the most decorated players in team history and helped build the program to become one of the best in NCAA Division II.
A native of Apple Valley, Minn., Contons burst onto the scene during her freshman season in 2004 ranking second on the team with 520 kills, while earning AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year, NSIC Newcomer of the Year and All-NSIC first team accolades. Her play helped SMSU qualify for the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history.
As a sophomore, Contons racked up a team-high 667 kills, while hitting a career best .287 in helping SMSU secure 26 victories and another trip to the NCAA Tournament. She was named All-NSIC first team and was honored with AVCA & Daktronics All-American second team honors for the first time in her career.
Contons put together an even bigger season in 2006, setting a school record with 737 kills to lead the Mustangs to the NCAA Tournament. She was named All-NSIC first team and was named AVCA & Daktronics All-American second team for the second straight season.
Contons would conclude her career in 2007, helping SMSU make a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, while leading the Mustangs with 570 kills. For her efforts, she was named the NSIC Player of the Year and AVCA All-America first team.
Contons finished her career ranking first in school history in kills (2,494), kills per set (5.1) and points (2,777.5), while ranking second in digs (1,743). During her four-year career, SMSU finished with a combined record of 101-35.
